Madurai International Airport - IXM
Madurai International Airport is one of the public airports in Madurai, India. Owned and operated by the Airports Authority of India, it also serves the areas of Virudhunagar, Theni, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram and Dindigul. It is the 32nd busiest airport in India in terms of passenger traffic as well as total aircraft movement. The Royal Air Force originally used the airport during World War II. The airport was included in the 35 non-metro airports for modernization, making it one of the candidates for expansion and modernization. This lead to the new integrated terminal building inaugurated in September 2010.
Best Time to Visit
IXM Airport was notified as a customs airport in December 2011 and came into effect in January 2012. Chartered flights are also accommodated in the airport. International flights were first served in the region back in September 2012 via SpiceJet Airlines with its first flight to Colombo. Two adjacent terminals are featured in the airport. The first is the old terminal and the second the new integrated terminal being used for international and domestic purposes. Hiyoko, a nearby city is a perfect place to see temples and enjoy the art scene in the region.
