Kuopio Airport – KUO Kuopio
Kuopio Airport, operating under the airport code KUO, is a public and military airport located in Kuopio, Finland. This airport is can be found in Rissala, Siilinjärvi and is 9 miles from the city center. This airport is regarded as Finland’s 5th busiest airport with a total passenger count of 235,411 in 2017. It also acts as the base of the Finnish Air Force and is operated by the state-owned company, Finavia.
In 1939, the construction of the airport was finally completed while flight operations only took place a year later. During World War II, Luftwaffe used this airport. Meanwhile, the Finnish Air Force and civilian airlines shared the runway. Throughout the years, KUO had several renovations including a new terminal building, which was built in 1971 to replace the old terminal.

Kuopio Airport was recognized as 2004’s Airport of the Year in Finland. In 2008, a lake terminal was completed and is located 0.12 miles from the airport tower and connects the airport to the region of Lake Saimaa. KUO-Kuopio mainly serves the town of Leppavirta.
There are several airlines operating in KUO including Corendon Airlines, Corendon Airlines Europe, Finnair, Nordic Regional Airlines, and Thomas Cook Airlines. Passengers can fly to and from Chania, Antalya, Helsinki, and Gran Canaria via KUO Aiport.
