Kuwait International Airport – KWI Kuwait
Kuwait International Airport (KWI) is an international airport in Farwaniya and is 9.6 miles away south of Kuwait City, Kuwait. It is the main hub for Jazeera Airways and Kuwait Airways. A part of KWI’s complex is used by the Abdullah Al-Mubarak Air Base, the main headquarters of the Kuwait Air Force which also houses a museum. The airbase was also used by the Italian Air Force to assist the fight against terrorist group, ISIL.
Best Time to Visit
This airport first opened in 1927. However, the airport’s structure was redesigned and reopened in 1979. KWI went through a huge renovation and expanded the airport with a new terminal, mall, and a multi-story parking facility. With the reconstruction and expansion projects, Kuwait International Airport can now handle over nine million passengers.
With continuous plans on improving KWI airport, KWI is expected to have five terminals by 2022. Kuwait International Airport serves mainly the city of Kuwait and its neighboring towns including Salwa, Fahaheel, Al Jahra, Al Sabah Al Salem, and Al Sabahiyah among many others.
What to Do & Area Attractions
KWI offers airport hotels for their guests for additional comfort and convenience. The Safir Airport Hotel is just a few minutes from the terminal and is located inside the airport grounds in between the Main and Amir Terminal. Outside the airport are several options. The Holiday Inn Kuwait Al Thuraya City is near the airport with a distance of 2.2 miles and is also located in Farwaniya.
