Macon is one of the cities located in Macon County and was platted back in 1856, named after Nathaniel Macon, one of the representatives of North Carolina in Congress. Macon City was the original post office established in the region but was changed to Macon a few decades after in 1892. The region serves as the home of the Wardell House, Bless Military Academy and the Macon County Courthouse and Annex that are all listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The region serves as the home of American actor Henderson Forsythe and former United States Senator and Assistant U.S. Secretary of the Interior Frank P. Briggs. The town is located near the Kirksville Municipal Airport.
