It is known for the being The Houseboat Capital of the World because of the many houseboat manufacturers located in the city. The city sits right next to the beautiful Lake Cumberland, where tourism thrives and the economy flourishes. Lake Cumberland is a man-made lake, one of the largest man-made lakes located east of the Mississippi River. Monticello, Kentucky was named after Thomas Jefferson’s home, like other cities named Monticello in the country. The nearest airport to Monticello, KY is the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, only less than 2 hours away from the city center.
