RAF Mount Pleasant – MPN Mount Pleasant
RAF Mount Pleasant is a Royal Air Force station alternatively known as Mount Pleasant Airport or Mount Pleasant Complex. It is in the British Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands. It is 33 miles southwest of Falklands’ capital, Stanley. While the island stands for the motto of “Desire the right”, the airfield, which is part of the British Forces South Atlantic Islands, also goes for the motto “Defend the right”. The airport houses around 2,000 military personnel and is classified as a permanent joint operating base. The Ministry of Defense owns the airport while the Royal Air Force operates it and the Joint Forces Command controls it.
Best Time to Visit
RAF Mount Pleasant was built and opened by Prince Andrew in 1985 and is operational up to the present. It has two asphalt runways measuring 2,590 meters and 1,525 meters respectively. The airport features a wide range of social and sporting facilities like a gym, golf course, swimming pool, diving center, bowling, mounting climbing, kart racing, Laser Quest, library, cinema, and other indoor and outdoor sports areas. It is the only airbase with a cricket field in Falkland during 2010. It also features two NAAFI shops, hairdressers, cafe, medical and educational centers. There is also a life radio station in the site called the BFBS Radio.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Stanley is a nearby city in the airbase where hotels are available. Malvina House Hotel and Southernwind B&B are located less than an hour drive from the airbase. Waterfront Boutique Hotel is located at the heart of Stanley and can also be traveled less than an hour from the airport.
