Nong Khai: A City of Unassuming Appeal
Nong Khai is the capital of the Nong Khai Province of Thailand. Located on the Mekong River near the original Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, Nong Khai is considered by most people simply as an entryway to the touristy Laos capital Ventiane. However, Nong Khai Thailand can hold its own as a tourist destination thanks to its stunning scenery of rolling mountains, riverside villages and extensive papaya and tobacco fields. Ask any expat in Nong Khai and they would be sure to tell you how peaceful and beautiful the place is.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is months from late November to early February. There are many Nong Khai accommodation providers in the city, but it would still be good to book your stay when there are fewer crowds and lodging is offered at discounted prices. One of the events you might want to join is the Naga Fireball Festival, which coincides with the Buddhist rains retreat (the month is variable, but most often falls on October).
What to Do & Area Attractions
Enjoy going through the stalls in Sadet Market, where you can find souvenirs, spices, electronics, clothing items and more. Visit Sala Keoku and be intrigued by the Buddhism- and Hinduism-inspired whimsical concrete sculptures of Bunleua Sulilat, a Nong Khai native. End your day tour with a good night’s rest in Nongkhai Resort, a hotel offering free Wi-Fi, a garden and free private parking. Ploy Inn Hotel Nong Khai, located at a prime spot, is highly recommended for clean and comfortable rooms, buffet breakfast and bike rentals.
