The name was taken from John Paterson who was a member of the Parliament and established the town. Paterson is located at the base of the Zuurberg Mountains in the middle of a game reserve. It lies in between Shamwari and Addo Elephant Park. The town is less than an hour from the beaches of Sunshine Coast and Port Elizabeth.
