Pohnpei International Airport – PNI Pohnpei
Pohnpei International Airport is a public airport located in Pohnpei Island, Federated States of Micronesia. Pohnpei Island was formerly known as Ponape and is the main island in Pohnpei State. Pohnpei is situated near Panikir, the capital of Micronesia.
Similar to other islands in the region, flights and commercial air services are limited in Micronesia. With the island’s small population as well as tourist activity, the airlines using PMI are limited to United Airlines, Caroline Islands, Nauru Airlines, and Air Niugini. Meanwhile, PNI has regular flights to Guam and Honolulu three times a week as well as chartered flights within the region.
In addition, Asia Pacific Airlines also transports cargo in and out of PNI. United Airlines serves as the main airline in the airport and services PNI-Pohnpei daily.
Best Time to Visit
In 2009, Pohnpei International Airport was renovated to make way for a new extension. While it has a passenger terminal and building, it doesn’t have any storage facilities on the grounds. The nearest city from the airport is Kolonia with a distance of 1.2 km. PNI Airport mainly serves the cities of Pohnpei, Kolonia, and Palikir and attends to 900 passengers per month who use the airport to fly in and out of Pohnpei.
