Pondicherry: An Indian Retreat with a French Twist
Pondicherry, India lies on the south-east coast of India and features fine French architecture thanks to the 300-year French occupation. Best Time to Visit
Late December to June are the best time to visit Pondicherry, India, which offers mostly hot weather throughout the year. There is significantly less precipitation in February, March, and January, and the least humidity in June. Head over in January to experience the Pongal Festival that celebrates the rice harvests, followed by the religious Masi Magam Festival in February. In April, locals celebrate the Puthandu or Tamil New Year. Bastille Day is also celebrated in Pondicherry on July 14th.
What to Do & Area Attractions
At the heart of the old Tamil town lies the Pondicherry Botanical Gardens, which features a 22-acre garden with over 1,500 species of plants, both endangered and exotic. It has 28 plots divided into separate themes for tourists to explore. Head over to the Pondicherry Museum to marvel at the collection of stone sculptures from the Pallava and Chola dynasties and other rare sculptures and excavated artifacts.
