Quatre Bornes: A Small Town with a Colonial Vibe
Quatre Bornes is a town in Mauritius known as situated in Plaines Wilhems District, about 9 miles south of Port Louis. Its name literally means “four boundaries” to refer to the boundary stones that separated the four sugar estates that were formerly located in the city. Today, Quatre Bornes is known as “The City of Flowers.” It can be reached by plane through the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Port Louis.
Best Time to Visit
Quatre Bornes is best explored on foot so it is recommended to visit between late April to late November. An annual flower fair is held in November so expect the area to be more crowded than usual during this time. From Quatre Bornes, you may also check out unique festivities in other parts of Mauritius, including Thimithi, or “Walk on Fire” in February and Ganesh Chaturthi, a Hindu festival celebrated in August.
