Sodankyla: Home of Jaegar Brigade
Sodankyla is a municipality in Lapland, Finland. It is home to the Jaegar Brigade, which trains around 1600 conscripts every year. Many people assumed that this place is rightly called Sodankyla, which can be translated as “village of war”, because of the location of the Finnish troops in the area. However, the simple truth is that this village was just named after a popular surname.
Best Time to Visit
Sodankyla has been hosting the Midnight Sun Film Festival for almost three decades now. This 5-day festival is characterized by a no-break showing of around 20-30 modern films that are mostly made by fill theorist. Since this event attracts 15,000-20,000 guests every year, booking Sodankyla lodgings in advance is a must to avoid running out of accommodation.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Museum of Local History and Culture offers stories about the town’s past and how it has progressed throughout the year. It is best to visit it during the winter when the gallery provides a VR-tour of the museum instead of a traditional walking tour. Another cultural highlight in Sodankyla is the Museum-Gallery Alariesto, which showcases over 100 works of art of the renowned painter. For accommodation needs, Hotelli Sodankylä boasts of having convenient access to the town center and the fields for mushrooms and berry picking. Those who would like to have a unique experience of staying at a modern makeshift igloo to see the northern lights can make their reservation at the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort - Igloos and Chalets. This recreation center also features ski lessons and hiking tours for their guests.
