Spencer, IA is a city in Iowa that annually hosts the Clay County Fair every September that draws over 300,000 tourists, both local and internationally to the region. It is also home to the late library cat, Dewey Readmore Books that has been a popular personality in the world before he died in 2006. The city was named after Senator George E. Spencer and officially became a part Clay County in 1858. In 2017, Spencer was named as one of "America's Best Small Towns" by the Smithsonian. It is the only community located in Iowa who made the list.
