Founded in the late 1800s by Walter Granger who played a pivotal role in the construction of the Sunnyside Canal that would have enabled irrigation from nearby Yakima River. At the turn of the 18th century, more people settled in Sunnyside, allowing economic growth. The town boasted of a bank; hotels; schools; shops; and a church the Dunkards, German Baptist immigrants from South Dakota, brought with them. Sunnyside, WA, accessible to visitors through the Yakima Air Terminal McAllister Field, was awarded the All-America City distinction in 1979.
