Fua’amotu International Airport – TBU Airport
Fua’amotu International Airport is located on the main island of Tongatapu, Tonga. It is named after a nearby village, but the airport is actually located on the Tu’I Pelehake estate. However, during construction of the airfield, the village of Pelehake did not exist yet, hence the name of the airport. Several international airlines operate passenger service to and from the airport.
Best Time to Visit
The TBU airport was constructed by Seabees and was originally intended as a heavy bomber field during the World War II. It had three coral runways at the time. By late 1970s, the runway was expanded, allowing jet aircrafts to use the runways. Today, the airport is able to accommodate aircrafts like the Boeing 767 but still cannot accommodate larger sized jets. The airport has air traffic control as well as navigational facilities. It has lighting for the runways, apron, and taxiway. The runway of the airport has strength limitations to certain aircrafts need permits to be able to use the runway. The airport is also closed on Sundays and can only be opened with the minister’s approval. Mu’a, ‘Utulau, and Nuku Alofa are some of the villages on Tongatapu island that use the TBU Airport for air service.
