Tissamaharama: Charismatic Temples and Bewitching Lakes
Tissamaharama, Sri Lanka is one of the historic towns in the Hambantota District, located at the southern province of Sri Lanka. The region used to be the capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom of Ruhuna, whose few buildings and buildings still remains to stand today. The Hindu Harvest Festival is one of the high profile events in the region. It is known locally as the Tamil Thai Pongal Day and celebrated annually during January 14. Tissamaharama celebrates two New Years in a year. The other one is during April 14, the Sinhala and Tamir New Year. Months from December to mid-April are the best time of the year to enjoy the beaches and the sun in the South and West Coast areas.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Considered as a prime tourist destination in Tissamaharama, the Yatala Dagoba is one of the remaining ancient Buddhist stupas located in the Hambantota District. It is built on a large flat granite stone with surrounding walls decorated by sculpted elephant heads, with large moats and moonstones.
