Tomakomai: A Pride of Hokkaido
Tomakomai, Japan is a city in Hokkaido. It is one of Hokkaido’s biggest cities. Its name came from 2 Ainu words, “to”, which means “marsh”; and “makomai”, which means river going into the depths of the mountain”. It was established as a village in 1873, as a town in 1918, and finally as a city in 1948.
Best Time to Visit
With a humid continental climate, the best time to visit Tomakomai is during the months of May through October. The busiest months are usually January, March, and April. Tourists are least likely to visit in December. One of the most anticipated events in the area is Toyama Port Harbor Festival, which is held every August. It is part of the city’s summer tradition. A fireworks display on the first day usually launches the celebration.

Northern Horse Park is one of the must-see attractions in the area. Affiliated with Northern Farm, a racehorse breeding and training farm, the attraction delivers insightful and interactive encounters with horses. Currently, it houses about 80 horses of 12 different breeds. During summer, visitors may cycle and play golf. During winter, they may enjoy cross country skiing and snow rafting.
