Uruma: Immersion Into Japanese Culture
A city in Okinawa, Uruma, Japan was only established in 2005. It is the merger of 2 cities, Gushikawa and Ishikawa, and 2 towns, Katsuren and Yonashiro. It is known as the starting point of civil life restoration in Okinawa right after World War II (WWII). The best way to get to Uruma is through nearby airports, such as the Aguni Airport, the Kerama Airport, and the Naha Airport.
Best Time to Visit
Uruma has the best weather during the months of October through May. Peak tourist season is usually in April, July, and November. People are least likely to visit in September. Generally, Japan is known for its cherry blossoms. As such, tourists should not miss Nago Cherry Blossom Festival, held every January in Nago Castle ruins. Then, there is also The Yonabaru Great Tug of War Festival every August. Since it started during the time of King Shoei if Ryukyu Kingdom, it has always celebrated the crop of the past year in hopes for a fruitful harvest in the coming season. Those who participate in the tug of war are believed to receive abundant blessings.

There are a lot of castle ruins in Okinawa, a nearby city. One of these is Chinen Castle Ruins in Nanjo. It is Ryukyu Islands’ second oldest castle. In 1972, it was named a National Historic Site. Take a tour at the Iha Castle Ruins, which is located on a cliff separating Iha from Ishikawa.
