Vaasa Airport, which operates under the airport code VAA is situated in the city of Vaasa, Finland, located 5.6 miles from the city center. VAA-Vaasa Airport is recognized as the sixth largest airport in Finland and was awarded thrice as Finland’s Airport of the Year in 2005, 2008, and 2017.

This public airport is operated by Finavia and was opened in 1938. The airport operations were closed down during the war and only reopened in 1945 after the airport’s building was completed for renovation. During the 1950s, the runway was extended while the building was expanded. A year later, the airport opened its first international connection to Sweden.

In 1971, the runway was extended again and VAA started operating flights from Finnair. However, the third and biggest expansion took place in 1993. Meanwhile, the renovation was finally completed in 2014 with a new baggage claim hall, additional shops, and a security control rearrangement. Vaasa Airport mainly serves the city of Vaasa.
