Virginia Airport - VIR Durban North
The Virginia Airport is a public airport located within Durban North, South Africa. The airport has an IATA code of VIR, and it serves Kwazulu-Natal province’s largest city. It once served as the location of the annual Durban Airshow, but at present it is used for aviation teaching and training. Plans are underway to close the current VIR Durban North Airport and replace its ground with residential and leisure developments. When it opened in 1959, the Virginia Airport was designated as the site of the city’s numerous air races. It had two hangars, which are currently still in use. At present, the airport serves as the hub of one of the country’s oldest flying clubs, the Durban Wings Club. The airport has a single asphalt runway measuring 3,305 feet long. The airport sits at an elevation of 20 feet above sea level. Plans are on the way for a new airport in Durban’s South Coast, but until then, Virginia Airport will function as the city’s main training ground.
