Became a city in 1949, Wakkanai is located in Sōya Subprefecture in Hokaido, Japan. The northernmost city in Japan, Wakkanai is the capital of SōyaSubprefecture. It contains also Cape Sōya, where the former Japan Island which is Sakhalin Island can be seen.
