The town was named after Isaac Williams who first settled in 1787. His home was located beside the Ohio River at the opening of Muskingum River and it is bordering the town of Marietta Ohio. The town is also known as Williams Creek and Williams District. Until 1822, Ohio River travelers called the town as Williamsport. This is also the year when the town was inaugurated. It is also the home of the Tomlison Mansion which is considered as a historic town.
