Walvis Bay International Airport – WVB Walvis Bay
Situated 9 miles east of Walvis Bay, Namibia, Walvis Bay International Airport is a public airport that serves Walvis Bay and other surrounding cities within the Erongo Region. The airport code of Walbis Bay is WVB and is also known as Rooikop Airport by the locals. WVB Airport serves as the hub for several Namibia airlines, such as Air Namibia, Ethiopian Air, and South African Airlines. Walvis Bay International Airport is scheduled to be the second international airport that will serve Namibia, after Hosea Kutako International Airport, the country's main international airport.
Best Time to Visit
In the early 1940s, WVB Airport used to be the home of the South African Air Force (SAAF) and AFB Rooikop, hence the local name Rooikop Airport. After SAAF squadron was closed down in 1994, the government of Namibia converted the airport for commercial use and renamed it as Walvis Bay International Airport. By 2007, the airport upgraded its facilities and services to cater to the growing number of passengers that travel to and from Walvis Bay, as well as its surrounding cities Douglas and Swakopmund. As of 2015, Walvis Bay Airport has handled 200,000 aircraft operations that carried almost 100,000 passengers that year. Due to the increase of travelers, Westair Aviation added 6 new flight destinations from the airport to other major cities in Namibia as well as within South Africa.
