Kars: A Medieval City
Kars, Turkey is the capital of Kars Province and is the largest city in Armenia. This city was the capital of the Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia for a brief time. Kars, Turkey is one of the country’s highest cities, 2000 meters above sea level. Hence, this city experiences one of the harshest weathers in Turkey. Visitors can fly to Kars through Kars Harakani Airport (KSY).
Best Time to Visit
The most ideal months to book a flight to Kars and enjoy more pleasant weather are from mid-June to mid-September. July and August are the wettest months in Kars while the rest of the year stays cold. Nighttime temperature in the city can fall below zero degrees Celsius. January is the least busy month for tourism and thus, Kars, TR hotels will be least expensive during this time.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Even with long, cold, winter days, this city has several attractions to offer its visitors. The Church of the Holy Apostles was constructed in the 930s and was converted into a mosque and later into a Russian Orthodox Church. Eventually, it was again converted into a mosque. Another popular landmark is the Castle of Kars, also referred to as the Central Castle, Inner Castle or Citadel. This castle was destroyed and rebuilt twice.
Visitors will find a couple of hotels in the city. Kar’s Otel - Special Class is one of the top choices of many tourists. It is located near the city center and is just a few minutes away from Kars Castle. Hotel Katerina Sarayı is another excellent choice and has a nice garden setting. The hotel’s location is a popular spot for cycling.
