Kalyani: From an American Airbase to a Tourist Destination
Kalyani, India is a municipality in West Bengal established formally in 1995. It used to be a site of an American airbase known as “Roosevelt Town” or “Roosevelt Nagar” during World War II (WWII). The perfect time to visit Kalyani is from November through March, for the best weather. Peak tourist season is usually during January, July, and September. Tourists are least likely to visit in November. One of the most popular events in the area is Pahela Baishakh or Bangla Nabobarsho, which is held every April 14 or 15. Celebrating the first day of the year in the Bengali calendar, it features fairs and processions. Particularly, Prabhat Pheri, an early morning cultural procession, is held. It was declared cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 2016. Another nearby event to look forward to is Swara Samrat Festival (SSF) in Kolkata, which is held every February. Since its launch in 2013, it has been celebrating Indian classical dance and music. It honors Swara Samrat Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
