Juwata International Airport– TRK Tarakan, Indonesia
Juwata International Airport (TRK) is an international airport situated on the island of Tarakan, North Kalimantan, Indonesia. The TRK was built during the Dutch colonial period and used as a military base for Dutch warplanes. Following Indonesia’s independence, the airport began operating as a pioneer airport for small planes. In 1997, the airport became an international airport when the first international flight to Tawau, Malaysia was opened. In 2017, the airport handled 2,443,221 passengers. The airport is also an airbase of the Indonesian Air Force bearing the name Suharnoko Harbani Air Force Base.
Best Time to Visit
Juwata International Airport has an asphalt-paved runway, 2 taxiways and another longer one that connects to the air force base. The apron has been expanded from the original as well as the passenger terminal enabling the airport to have a bigger capacity. The new terminal was officially inaugurated in 2016. Plans for TRK airport include making it a transit hub for people from ASEAN countries traveling to the country since it is listed as a destination point of the ASEAN Single Aviation Market.
