Vientiane: Taking it Slow in the City
Vientiane is the capital city of Laos and it is also the country’s largest. It is located along the banks of the Mekong River near the Thailand border. Vientiane, Laos is known for the being the home of That Luang, a significant national monument of Buddhism in the country. While the city is the largest in the country and sits beautifully next to the Mekong, it is a laid-back city where visitors come to simply relax and get away from the busy hustle of life. Visitors will arrive at the city through the Wattay International Airport.
Best Time to Visit
Come November to March, there is a huge influx of tourists in the city since this is the best time to visit the country. The large number of tourists may make finding a well-priced hotel accommodation hard. Visiting during the country’s New Year festival is a fun thing to do and is similar to the famous Songkran festival of Thailand.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Visit the country’s famous and sacred monument, the Pha That Luang. It dates as far back as the 3rd century and is a popular place for tourists to pay respects and get a taste of the country’s spirituality. Have fun at night by going to the Ban Anou Night Market and get a taste of local cuisine and entertainment. Visitors may also visit the Haw Phra Kaew, formerly a Buddhist shrine but now a museum of religious arts in the country.
